The JCOP Shell

The JCOP Tools contain the JCOP Shell, a tool providing functionality to handle a smart card. It contains several operations/functions compliant with GlobalPlatform 2.1.1 / OpenPlatform 2.0.1' and Java Card 2.2.1 / Java Card 2.0.1 specification. The JCShell also allows you to exercise functions of a smart card on the APDU level.

The JCOP Shell (JCShell) philosophy is that of a shell as known from UNIX programming: You can run it in an interactive mode (enter commands), e.g. for trial-and-error runs, as well as a executing scripts, e.g., automatically loading applets, selecting and personalizing them without further intervention.

The JCOP Shell already contains functions/commands to handle GlobalPlatform cards. APDU commands of custom applets or non GlobalPlatform cards can be easly integrated by either writing simple scripts or by extending the shell functionality with a so called Shell plugins.

JCOP Shell view

The JCOP Tools Shell is an Eclipse view which provides the JCShell functionality and support as a combination of different components:

OUTPUT PANEL
The JCShell output panel shows all commands and responses. The amount of information displayed can be defined using the JCShell /mode command. Text from the panel is selectable and may copied to the clipboard.

COMMAND LINE
JCShell commands can be entered in the command line area. You can either type a new command or select a previous command from the history (last 100 commands) using cursor up or down keys. Enter the name of JCShell scripts in the command line to select and execute a script.

After the JCShell has been started, it will display a simple command prompt, designated by a - character. It indicates that no communication to smart card reader is established. The prompt changes to a caret (>) indicating a connection to a smart card reader. The prompt changes to cm> indicating successful activation of the CardManager plugin.
